How do I calculate slope from two points?

Use m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁) — subtract the y-values, subtract the x-values, and divide.

What does the slope value tell me?

Its sign shows direction (positive rises, negative falls) and its size shows steepness — larger magnitude means a steeper line.

What is a zero slope?

A horizontal line. There is no vertical change, so the rise is zero and the slope is 0.

When is slope undefined?

For a vertical line, where the run (change in x) is zero and division by zero is undefined.

Does it matter which point I call first?

No, as long as you are consistent — subtract the coordinates in the same order top and bottom and you get the same slope.

How do I get the line equation from the slope?

Use y = mx + b: substitute the slope and one point’s coordinates to solve for b, the y-intercept.

Calculating slope from two points

This calculator finds the slope of the line through any two points using m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁) — the change in y divided by the change in x. Enter the coordinates and it returns the slope, telling you how steep the line is and which way it tilts.

Worked example

Through the points (2, 3) and (6, 11): the rise is 11 − 3 = 8 and the run is 6 − 2 = 4, so the slope is 8 ÷ 4 = 2. The line climbs two units for every one unit it moves to the right.

Interpreting the result

A positive slope rises left to right, a negative slope falls, a zero slope is a flat horizontal line, and a vertical line has an undefined slope because the run is zero. The larger the absolute value, the steeper the line.

Slope underpins linear equations, rates of change and real-world steepness like road grades and roof pitches. Once you have the slope and a point, you can write the line’s full equation in the form y = mx + b.
