How do I calculate the average of numbers?
Add all the values together and divide by the count of values. The average of 4, 8 and 18 is 30 รท 3 = 10.
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by the count; the median is the middle value when sorted; the mode is the most frequent value.
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
Use the median when the data has outliers or is skewed, such as incomes or house prices, where a few extreme values would distort the mean.
What is a weighted average?
An average where each value is multiplied by a weight reflecting its importance, then divided by the total weight โ common for grades and indexes.
Can a data set have more than one mode?
Yes. If two or more values tie for the most frequent, the set is bimodal or multimodal. If no value repeats, there is no mode.
Does the order of the numbers affect the mean?
No. The mean depends only on the sum and the count, so rearranging the numbers gives the same result.
How to find an average
The most common average is the arithmetic mean: add up all the values and divide by how many there are. For the numbers 4, 8 and 18, the mean is (4 + 8 + 18) รท 3 = 10. This calculator computes the mean instantly for any list of numbers you enter.
Mean, median and mode
The mean can be skewed by extreme values, so two other averages are often useful. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted, and the mode is the value that appears most often. For incomes or house prices, the median usually describes the "typical" figure better than the mean.
Weighted averages
When some values count more than others โ like graded coursework โ use a weighted average: multiply each value by its weight, add those up, and divide by the total weight. A test worth 70% scoring 80, plus homework worth 30% scoring 90, gives 0.7ร80 + 0.3ร90 = 83.
Averages summarise a data set in a single number, which makes them powerful but also easy to misread. Always consider the spread of the data too โ a mean of 50 means something very different for the sets {49,50,51} and {0,50,100}.
