To add or subtract, the fractions need a common denominator. For 1⁄3 + 1⁄4, convert both to twelfths: 4⁄12 + 3⁄12 = 7⁄12. Once the denominators match, you simply add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator.
Multiplying and dividing
Multiplication is the easy one: multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, so 2⁄3 × 3⁄5 = 6⁄15 = 2⁄5. To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply: 1⁄2 ÷ 1⁄4 = 1⁄2 × 4⁄1 = 2.
