How it works
Adding tax multiplies the net price by the rate and adds it on. Removing tax works backwards from a tax-inclusive price to find the original net amount.
Gross = Net × (1 + rate); Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate)Frequently asked questions
What are the GST slabs in India?
After the GST 2.0 reform of 22 September 2025, the main slabs are 0%, 5% and 18%, with 40% on luxury and sin goods. 18% is the standard rate for most items.
How do I add 18% GST?
Multiply the price by 1.18. ₹1,000 plus 18% GST is ₹1,180, of which ₹180 is GST.
How do I find the GST in an inclusive price?
For an 18% item, multiply the total by 18 and divide by 118. A ₹1,180 inclusive price contains ₹180 of GST.
What changed under GST 2.0?
The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were largely merged, leaving mainly 5% and 18%, with a 40% rate for luxury and sin goods, effective 22 September 2025.
What are CGST and SGST?
For sales within the same state, GST is split equally between central GST (CGST) and state GST (SGST) — for example 9% each on an 18% item.
GST Calculator (India)
India’s GST has several slabs. Following the GST 2.0 reform effective 22 September 2025, the main rates are 0%, 5% and 18%, with a higher 40% rate on luxury and “sin” goods. 18% is the standard rate for most goods and services. This calculator works with any slab.
How to add GST
Multiply the price by (1 + slab). For the 18% slab, multiply by 1.18; the GST amount is the net price × 0.18.
GST from an inclusive price (18%)
The GST inside an inclusive total is the total × 18 ÷ 118, and the price before GST is the total ÷ 1.18.
| Task (18% slab) | Calculation | On ₹1,000 / ₹1,180 |
|---|---|---|
| Add 18% GST | net × 1.18 | ₹1,000 → ₹1,180 |
| GST amount | net × 0.18 | ₹180 |
| GST inside a total | total × 18 ÷ 118 | ₹1,180 → ₹180 |
For sales within a state, GST splits equally into CGST and SGST (e.g. 9% + 9% for an 18% item). General information only, not tax advice.
