How does it handle overnight times?
If the end time is earlier than the start, it assumes the next day and adds 24 hours, so a 10 PM to 6 AM shift counts as 8 hours.
What are decimal hours?
Hours expressed as a decimal: 30 minutes is 0.5, 15 minutes is 0.25. This format is used for payroll and billing.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. So 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours.
Can I subtract a break?
Subtract the break duration from the total to get worked hours — an 8.5-hour span with a 30-minute break is 8 worked hours.

Counting hours between two times
This calculator works out how much time passes between a start and end time, returning the result in hours and minutes or as decimal hours. It correctly handles spans that cross midnight, so an overnight shift is counted properly.
Worked example
From 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours and 30 minutes, or 8.5 decimal hours. From 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8 hours — the calculator adds a day when the end time is earlier than the start, recognising it falls on the next morning.
Decimal hours
For pay and timesheets, hours are often needed as decimals: 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, 15 minutes is 0.25, and 20 minutes is 0.333. Multiply decimal hours by an hourly rate to get pay directly, which is why payroll uses this format.
