Density Calculator IT
Calculate density from mass and volume, and rearrange to find mass or volume from density.
How it works
Enter mass and volume in any consistent units. The calculator divides mass by volume to give density, and also shows how to rearrange the formula to find mass or volume.
Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for density?
Density = mass ÷ volume. The same relationship gives mass = density × volume and volume = mass ÷ density.
What units is density measured in?
Common units are grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³) and kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³). Use any consistent mass and volume units.
Why does something float?
An object floats if its density is lower than the fluid around it. Cork (about 0.24 g/cm³) floats on water (1.0 g/cm³); iron sinks.
How do I find mass from density?
Multiply density by volume. A material with density 4 g/cm³ and volume 50 cm³ has a mass of 200 g.
Density Calculator
Density tells you how much mass is packed into a given volume. It explains why a brick sinks and a cork floats, and is central to physics, chemistry and engineering.
The density formula
Density = mass ÷ volume. Rearranged, mass = density × volume, and volume = mass ÷ density.
Worked example
A 200 g block with a volume of 50 cm³ has a density of 200 ÷ 50 = 4 g/cm³ — four times denser than water.
Common densities
| Material | Approx. density (g/cm³) |
|---|---|
| Water | 1.0 |
| Aluminium | 2.7 |
| Iron | 7.9 |
| Gold | 19.3 |
