How do I find the slope between two points?

Subtract the y-values and divide by the difference in x-values: (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁). For (1,2) and (4,8) the slope is 2.

What is the slope formula?

Slope = rise over run = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁), the change in y divided by the change in x.

What is a zero slope?

A zero slope is a horizontal line — there is no rise, so the line is flat.

What is an undefined slope?

A vertical line has an undefined slope, because the run (change in x) is zero and you cannot divide by zero.

What does rise over run mean?

Rise is the vertical change between two points and run is the horizontal change; slope is rise divided by run.

What is slope-intercept form?

It is y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the point where the line crosses the y-axis.

The slope formula

Slope (m) = rise ÷ run = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁). For the points (1, 2) and (4, 8): (8 − 2) ÷ (4 − 1) = 6 ÷ 3 = 2.

What the sign means

  • Positive slope rises left to right.
  • Negative slope falls left to right.
  • Zero slope is a flat, horizontal line.
  • Undefined slope is a vertical line (the run is zero, so you cannot divide).

Slope-intercept form

A line is often written y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis).
