Average Calculator NL
Find the mean, median, mode, range and standard deviation of any list of numbers in one step.
How it works
Type your numbers separated by commas or spaces. The calculator sorts them and returns the mean (average) along with the median, mode, range, minimum, maximum and standard deviation.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate an average?
Add all the numbers together and divide by how many numbers there are. The average of 4, 8 and 6 is 18 รท 3 = 6.
What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean is the sum divided by the count; the median is the middle value when sorted. The median resists distortion from extreme values.
Can an average be a decimal?
Yes. The average of 3 and 4 is 3.5 โ it does not have to be one of the original numbers.
What is a weighted average?
An average where some values count more than others: multiply each value by its weight, sum those, and divide by the total weight.
What are mean, median and mode?
Mean is the arithmetic average, median is the middle sorted value, and mode is the most frequently occurring value.
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
When a few very high or very low values would skew the mean, the median often better represents the typical value.
Average Calculator
The average (or mean) is the central value of a set of numbers. This calculator adds your numbers and divides by how many there are.
How to calculate the average
Average = sum of values รท number of values. For 4, 8 and 6: (4 + 8 + 6) รท 3 = 18 รท 3 = 6.
Mean, median and mode
- Mean โ the sum divided by the count (the everyday โaverageโ).
- Median โ the middle value when the numbers are sorted.
- Mode โ the value that appears most often.
The median is often more representative when a few very large or very small values would distort the mean.
Weighted average
When some values count more, multiply each by its weight, add those, and divide by the total weight โ useful for grades or weighted scores.
