How do I calculate the grade I need on my final?
Use (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. It gives the exam score needed to hit your overall target.
What does the final exam weight mean?
It is the share of your total course grade the final is worth — for example, 30% means the exam counts for 0.30 of the overall mark.
What if the required score is above 100%?
Then your target is not achievable from the final alone; you would need extra credit or a lower target, since no exam score can reach it.
What if I get a higher score than needed?
Your overall grade will simply exceed your target. The calculator shows the minimum needed, not a cap.
Does my current grade already include the final?

Working out the grade you need
A final grade calculator tells you the score you need on your final exam to reach a target overall grade, given your current grade and how much the final is worth. It rearranges the weighted-average formula so you can plan exactly what the exam requires.
The formula
If your final is worth a fraction w of the course, the score you need is: (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. So with an 82% current grade, a final worth 30%, and a 85% target: (85 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 92%.
Worked example
Suppose you have 78% going into a final worth 40% and want an overall 80%. You need (80 − 78 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 83% on the exam. If the required figure comes out above 100%, the target is not reachable with that exam weight alone.
