Fraction Calculator MX
Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and get the answer as a simplified fraction, a mixed number and a decimal.
How it works
Enter the two fractions, choose an operation, and the calculator combines them and reduces the result to its simplest form, also showing the mixed-number and decimal equivalents.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add fractions?
Give them a common denominator, add the numerators, then simplify. 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6.
How do I multiply fractions?
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then simplify. 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2.
How do I divide fractions?
Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal (flip) of the second. 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. 8/12 becomes 2/3.
How do I convert a mixed number to a fraction?
Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and keep the denominator. 2¼ = 9/4.
Why do fractions need a common denominator to add?
Because you can only add parts of the same size; a common denominator rewrites both fractions in equal-sized pieces.
Fraction Calculator
This calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides fractions and gives the answer in its simplest form. Here is the method behind each operation.
Adding and subtracting
Put both fractions over a common denominator, then add or subtract the numerators: a/b ± c/d = (ad ± cb) / (bd). For example, 1/2 + 1/3 = (3 + 2)/6 = 5/6.
Multiplying and dividing
To multiply, multiply across: (a/b) × (c/d) = ac/bd. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal: (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = ad/bc. So 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = (2×5)/(3×4) = 10/12 = 5/6.
Simplifying
Divide the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor. 8/12 simplifies to 2/3 because both divide by 4.
Mixed numbers
Convert a mixed number to an improper fraction first: 2¼ = (2×4 + 1)/4 = 9/4. Convert back by dividing the numerator by the denominator.
