Estimating how many bricks you need
The number of bricks for a wall is the wall’s area divided by the area each brick covers, including its mortar joint. This calculator does that division and adds a wastage allowance, so you order enough without large leftovers.
The method
Work out the wall area (length × height), then divide by the face area of one brick plus its mortar. A standard US modular brick covers roughly the equivalent of about 7 bricks per square foot of wall for a single-thickness (half-brick) wall, so a 100 sq ft wall needs around 700 bricks.
Allow for waste
Always add a 5–10% wastage margin for cuts, breakages and offcuts around openings. Subtract the area of any doors or windows first, then apply the margin to the remaining wall area so you are not paying for bricks you cannot use.
Double-thickness (full-brick) walls roughly double the count, and mortar joint size changes the total too — thicker joints mean fewer bricks. Confirm the exact face size of your chosen brick, since dimensions vary by type and region.
