Frequently asked questions
What is the POMIS interest rate for 2026?
For the April–June 2026 quarter it is 7.4% per annum, paid monthly. The rate is fixed for your full 5-year term once the account is opened.
How is the monthly income calculated?
Multiply your deposit by 7.4% and divide by 12. ₹9 lakh gives ₹5,550 a month.
What is the maximum I can invest in POMIS?
₹9 lakh in a single account and ₹15 lakh in a joint account; the minimum is ₹1,000.
Is the POMIS rate fixed for the whole tenure?
Yes. Unlike a quarterly-reset deposit, the rate when you open stays locked for the entire 5-year period.
Can I withdraw before five years?
Premature closure is allowed after one year, with a penalty of 1–2% of the deposit depending on when you exit.
Is POMIS interest taxable?
The monthly interest is taxable as per your income-tax slab; there is no TDS, so you must declare it yourself.
Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (POMIS) Calculator
POMIS is a government-backed small-savings scheme from India Post that pays a fixed monthly income on a lump-sum deposit held for five years.
Current interest rate
For the April–June 2026 quarter the POMIS rate is 7.4% per annum, paid monthly. The rate that applies when you open the account stays fixed for the full 5-year tenure, even if the government revises rates later.
How the monthly income is worked out
Monthly income = deposit × 7.4% ÷ 12. On the maximum single-account deposit of ₹9,00,000 that is ₹9,00,000 × 7.4% ÷ 12 = ₹5,550 a month. A joint account allows up to ₹15,00,000, giving about ₹9,250 a month.
Deposit limits
Minimum ₹1,000; maximum ₹9 lakh in a single account and ₹15 lakh jointly. Premature closure is allowed after one year with a small penalty.
Scheme rates and limits are revised periodically by the authorities; confirm the current figures on the official portal before investing.
